We are excited for our Virtual Back to School Night at M.S. 129, The Academy for Independent Learning and Leadership! This event will be held entirely online via Zoom. Please find the event flow below, along with the meeting link.

Flow of Events:

  1. Welcome and Introduction (5 minutes) - Mr. Reyes

    • Opening remarks by the principal
    • Overview of the school’s mission to foster independence and leadership
    • Brief review of the evening’s agenda
  2. School Overview (5 minutes)

    • Introduction to M.S. 129’s core values and focus on preparing 6th to 8th graders for success
    • Emphasis on our family-school partnership
  3. Curriculum Overview (40 minutes total)

    • Expeditionary Learning for ELA (10 minutes) - AP Torres Colon
      Inquiry-based literacy instruction with real-world projects
      Highlights of 6th, 7th, and 8th grade focus areas
    • Illustrative Mathematics (10 minutes) - AP Davis
      Problem-based learning curriculum designed to deepen math understanding
      Key topics across grades, from ratios to linear equations
    • Passport to Social Studies (10 minutes) - AP Torres Colon
      Focus on historical understanding and civic engagement
      Highlights of social studies topics from ancient civilizations to modern U.S. history
    • Amplify Science (10 minutes) - AP Davis
      Hands-on science learning, encouraging inquiry and critical thinking
      Key topics include Earth’s systems, forces, evolution, and natural selection
  4. Communication and Support (5 minutes) - AP Paez

    • Information on school communication tools (Grades, Attendance, Messenger app, email, etc.)
    • How families can support student success at home
    • Upcoming parent-teacher conferences and family workshops
  5. Meet and Greet with Teachers in Breakout Rooms (15 minutes)

    • Families will have the opportunity to meet their child’s teachers in virtual Zoom breakout rooms
    • Teachers will introduce themselves and share their classroom expectations
    • Families can ask any questions they may have directly with their child’s teachers
  6. Closing Remarks and Q&A (5 minutes) - Mr. Reyes

    • Thank you to families for their partnership
    • Open the floor for questions and discussions
    • Encourage continued family involvement throughout the school year
